On the scalability of wave energy converters

To achieve cost parity with other renewables, the wave energy sector requires significant reduction. Increasing wind turbine scale is one successful route to reduction in industry. This paper aims at investigating scalability of converters (WECs) and providing a thorough review analysis published data. Unlike turbines for which absorbed increases diameter, WECs complicated varies by WEC type. Here, we demonstrate that point absorber (PA) lacks has limited theoretical capture width (CW), although its ratio (CWR) can exceed 100%. The CW device terminator length attenuator WECs, demonstrating scalability, but CWR limits 50% 100% exist. Analysis practical performance data carried out this work shows that: (1) due lack it will be difficult PA unit reach MW scale, most examples, characteristic dimension generally < 35 m; (2) could using high > 100 (3) appears more efficiently than (e.g., oscillating surge converters, hydrodynamic efficiencies up 80% have been achieved laboratory tests).
